A Phoenix man is in critical condition following a shooting incident that occurred Sept. 2 a half-mile south of Highway 277 on Gibson Road outside of Overgaard. According to the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office, a call was received at 8:48 a.m. that Christen Reece, 23, was with six others shooting in the area when he reportedly placed a gun to his head and shot himself in an effort to illustrate that the handgun he was using had a double safety and would not fire. His companions drove him to the Heber-Overgaard Fire Department, where paramedics began to treat him. He was then airlifted to Scottsdale Osborn Hospital. Reece underwent surgery, but his prognosis was unknown at press time. Four of the subjects fled the scene, two of whom have been identified, but not yet located or interviewed. Sheriff’s detectives are investigating the incident.
