Jake Hall, who has two brothers attending Taylor Elementary School, completed his Eagle Scout project by helping students at the school build and organize a garden box.

Irene Hunt, a health educator for Navajo County Health Services, wrote curriculum for the teachers, and provided a handout for the students on health and nutrition. She also provided the gardening tools as part of a Navajo County project to teach students about healthy eating.

First through third grade students planted a variety of vegetables, including radishes, green beans and spinach, that will help them understand healthy eating habits. The project will help students learn responsibility and promote gardening in the community.

Students had a Popsicle party after the planting and campus cleanup.

“In the future, our school plans on obtaining grant money to keep and expand our garden in order to use it as an outdoor classroom for our students,” said Principal Jeremy Hatch.

Hall built the grow boxes from lumber donated by Kay Supply. Ace Hardware donated the metal for the support bars, while gravel was donated by Hatch Construction, soil by Reidhead Sand & Rock, and gloves for the workers by Tucson Electric Power.

As part of Jake Hall’s Eagle Scout project, he helped students at Taylor Elementary School build and organize a garden box April 3. The students then planted their garden.
