Linda SooHoo passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2014, in La Cañada, Calif. Services and interment will be held on Friday, Nov. 21, at Forest Lawn-Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles, Calif.
Born in Canton, China, in 1924 and married to Fred SooHoo (deceased) for over 62 years, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
As a new bride, she and Fred arrived in Winslow in 1947, where they helped her father run Sam Woo Grocery and later Sam’s Food Mart. Over the next 60 years, she and her husband ran many successful businesses, but among the old-timers, she is probably best known as the creator of “Freddy’s Tacos” at Freddy’s Drive-in, which opened in 1966. She ran the business until 1999, when she “retired” to help her husband run their other businesses.
They placed a high value on education and all of their energies were focused on ensuring that their children had every possible chance to pursue a college education. She was very proud of the fact her four children each graduated with bachelor’s degrees and went on to collectively earn three master’s, a Ph.D. and M.D. degrees. She and Fred also encouraged and supported the various pursuits of their grandchildren, and were very proud of their achievements.
Survivors include her sons, Spencer (Janice), Randy (Peggy) and Mark (Cindy), and her daughter, Kim (Peter), as well as seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish to make a donation to Alzheimer’s Research, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, in memory of Linda SooHoo. Checks should be made payable to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with “Linda SooHoo and Alzheimer’s Research” on the memo line or in a cover letter, and mailed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Attn: Paola Werstler, 8700 Beverly Blvd., Suite 2416, Los Angeles, Calif. 90048.
