The Navajo Election Administration has tentatively selected Dec. 23 as the date for voters to select the next president of the Navajo Nation.

The election was postponed when candidate Chris Deschene was disqualified from running by a ruling that he did not meet the requirement of being fluent in the Navajo language. That disqualification canceled the election as Deschene’s name was on the ballot.

Russell Begaye moved up to that position as he received the next highest number of votes, but a grievance has been filed against Begaye alleging financial improprieties. A hearing was scheduled Thursday to discuss the grievance.

Begaye is running against former President Joe Shirley Jr.
