A total of 1,324 early and provisional ballots cast in Navajo County for the Nov. 4 General Election, the majority of them provisional, still remained to be counted by midday last Friday, leaving the results of a couple of races in question. Complete results were expected by Monday.
According to the unofficial results, the passage of a budget override requested by the Winslow Unified School District looked fairly secure, with 888 votes for it and 868 against it. That flipped the outcome reflected by totals available the morning after the election, which showed the measure failing by the slimmest of margins, 777 votes to 776.
Charles Foote led the race for two four-year seats on the Snowflake Unified School District Governing Board with 1,239 votes, followed by Carole “Nellie” Owens with 1,231; Beverlee Kay, 1,229; and Amy Johnson, 591. Terry Stratton received 1,173 votes, but had withdrawn his candidacy because his wife is employed by the school district.
Cory Johnson was the only candidate vying for the two-year term on the school board and was thus deemed elected, so his name was not on the ballot.
Snowflake School District Superintendent Hollis Merrell said last Friday that a decision on whether a recount would be required would be made when all votes have been tallied.
