On the afternoon of Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, Samuel Rice passed away in his home at the age of 93.
Samuel leaves behind Patsy, his wife of 64 years; two sons, Charles W. Rice and Thomas O. Rice; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
During World War II at the age of 22, Samuel Rice was awarded the Silver Star medal and a Presidential Unit Citation. As a gunner’s mate second class, Samuel silenced two enemy machine gun nests on the island of Sicily. Because of his total disregard for his own safety, other vessels were able to beach, allowing troops to disembark and conquer the island.
From 1952-62, Samuel had a local business, Sam’s Neon Service, in Winslow, then he went to work for the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad until he retired in 1982.
Even though Samuel lived a long full life, he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Greer’s Mortuary of Winslow was in charge of the arrangements.
