Photo courtesy of the Navajo County Attorney’s OfficeMarch 2 was National Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss' birthday, so Navajo County Attorney Brad Carylon donned his Cat in the Hat hat and socks and had a great morning sharing Dr. Seuss with kindergarteners and first graders at Park Elementary School in Holbrook. “My parents were readers, they helped me become a lifelong reader, and I had the joy of encouraging my kids to become readers from a very young age. Read to a child when you get the chance -- the delight in their eyes will take you back to your own childhood flights of fancy, and who doesn't want to experience that from time to time?” stated Carlyon.

Photo courtesy of the Navajo County Historical SocietyNear the turn of the 20th century, Holbrook was the primary shipping point for wool and was the center of commerce for eastern Arizona. After the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad was laid in 1881, 300,000 pounds of wool was shipped from Holbrook. By 1896, the freight depot was handling about 1.1 million pounds of wool a year, along with cattle and sheep. Here, mules haul their heavy loads into the rail station in 1900.
